Drew Charter School, Atlanta GA, 2013

Sustenance Design designed and implemented the learning garden at the progressive Drew Charter School in the East Lake neighborhood of Atlanta. The result is a central courtyard filled with opportunities for students to learn about sustainability, biodiversity and ecosystem function in each season.

Features of the designed space include: outdoor musical instruments created by students and local artist Jeff Mather; a rain harvest system used for irrigation, with cistern overflow directed to a bio-swale that infiltrates before draining into the storm sewer; flow forms convey water from roof downspouts to the cistern to enliven and cleanse water; a variety of edible and medicinal trees, shrubs and perennials; a seasonal meadow with a multitude of ecosystem functions, and a living willow sculpture functioning as an outdoor room sized for children.

The courtyard is enjoyed year-round.
